Hydra Springs®

Hydra Springs are precision hydraulic devices using the compressibility of specially designed oils to produce unusually efficient and highly resilient spring actions. They can develop up to 600% more force than fixed loaded mechanical springs of similar dimensions. The compact size, instant action and high spring force of Hydra Springs makes them ideal components in many installations where space is at a premium.

What They Are

Hydra Springs are sealed steel chambers containing a piston, filled
with a unique hydraulic oil.

How They Work

When the action of the press or mold machine forces the piston down into the Hydra Spring chamber, the oil compresses and pushes back against the piston providing spring pressure. The spring force developed is determined by the piston diameter and the amount of pressure generated by the compressed oil in the given Hydra Spring. Pressure increase is controlled by the initial or preload pressure and the amount of oil in the chamber.

Applications

This spring force may be used for stripping, lifting, and releasing operations within die sets or molds. Hydra Springs may also be used as individual components in larger machine tools or in conjunction with (external to) the die. Hydra Springs are also used to replace mechanical springs within certain C-Frame unitized tools manufactured by UniPunch Products, Inc.

Benefits

Hydra Springs develop tremendous spring forces within a very small space. This small “envelope” within the die or mold allows designers to place force where it is needed. The cost savings in machining time and material saved when making a die or mold are truly stupendous. Hydra Springs are delivered set with various preloads, and their “instant action” allows for consistent, reliable spring rates along the entire curve of the working stroke.
